Tom Dumoulin, leader of the Jumbo-Visma team, will not go to the end of the Giro 2022. Winner of the event five years ago, the Dutchman, picked up by the peloton on the road to Turin, threw in the towel this Saturday after fifty kilometers of racing on the 14th stage.
Dumoulin had lost a lot of time on the first big ascent of the race, on May 10 on the slopes of Mount Etna, and had revealed a few days later suffered from back pain. He had made up for it by helping his teammate Koun Boewman to win the 7th stage in Potenza, but was in 31st place overall this Saturday, nearly 20 minutes behind Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo), the pink jersey. Dumoulin had made the Giro his big goal for the year.
