The foldable screen Google Pixel would arrive before the end of the year and it could be a very good thing for the whole Android ecosystem.
In September 2021, several rumors announced that Google was working on two smartphones with foldable screen. Some even thought that these devices could arrive on the market at the end of 2021. It is clear that this was not the case. The same source, @DSCCRoss, had declared the project “dead” last year following the cancellation of screen controls. However, one, at least, of these smartphones with a folding screen from Google would still be relevant.

The device would even have a screen similar to that of the highly anticipated Samsung Z Fold4 (6.19 inches) but with a smaller cover screen, 5.8 inches. A launch during the last quarter of 2022 is quite credible insofar as Google has ample time to finalize the device, if it has not already been done, and these screens may not suffer from the same problems of supply than for higher volume products.
And that could be a very good thing for the whole Android ecosystem.
Beyond the device itself, it is very interesting to learn that the Mountain View company is fully immersed in the user experience with a foldable screen. With such a smartphone in the giant’s catalog, this should make it possible to see a better integration of this format in Android. Samsung has already done a very good job on this and all the clones in the market today are based on the original Samsung Fold designs. The South Korean giant has also done a lot of roughing in the whole user experience to make this concept the success it is today.
That being said, it is now imperative that the main force behind the operating system, namely Google, fully commits to this foldable screen format. It’s a safe bet that its teams are already working on the many APIs needed to take applications to the next level and make them fully and perfectly compatible with foldable screens.
