The Avenue restaurant, in Clermont-Ferrand, offers fine cuisine with Mediterranean influences

Right in the city centre, just next to Place de la Victoire, in the small rue Massillon, welcome… to Avenue! Something to smile about. But this name refers to the restaurants where the chef worked, “always in the biggest avenues, like in Montreal, Chicago…”.Inside, a cosy, sober atmosphere, “to please everyone”. However, there are very personal notes, such as a painting made by Kristèle’s grandmother or a pastry book by Julien’s great-grandfather.

Julien Montagne, in the kitchen, and Kristèle Grosrenaud, in the dining room, have been at the head of this restaurant for eleven years. He, the descendant of three generations of pastry chefs, has therefore passed through several houses and traveled a lot. In particular, he lived for a few years in Greece, spent seasons in Majorca, which made great use of his cuisine. Kristèle, for her part, discovered the restaurant industry with Avenue. And since then, she has been passionate about wines.

The kitchen

“What characterizes us? The perfect cooking of fish”. At Avenue, you will always have seafood, not forgetting octopus, which the chef is not allowed to remove from the menu. His travels have therefore given a Mediterranean color to his menu, with a good use of spices.Fresh products, local if possible, collaboration with the chocolatier Mathieu Arthaud, with Radix for the organic aromatic plants… In the end, this gives, just for example, grilled halloumi, watermelon, balsamic cream and piquillo coulis. But also grilled ham and salsa with olives, smoked spices, crispy polenta. And to finish, a rice pudding with coconut, vanilla and strawberry salad.

Our favorite dish: what comes from the sea

Octopus, the chef’s specialty, was on the menu when we came. Combined with prawns, crushed tomatoes and mashed potatoes in very thick olive oil. A perfect balance.

And as good blood cannot lie, we loved the desserts. Like this pineapple carpaccio, simple but so effective when it is worked with a saffron syrup and accompanied by shavings of coconut and an ice cream.

On drinks what?

We trust Kristèle, because it is her domain. And all the wines in the cellar, his favourites. “There’s nothing here that we haven’t tasted!” First of all, I have to like it. It is as much Burgundy as white wine from the south of France. It is according to his discoveries, the meetings with the winegrowers…
