Available in beta for developers, iOS 16 displays new features focused on ergonomics. It inaugurates a lock screen enriched with widgets as well as a contactless interaction mode.

As usual, Apple lifted the veil on iOS 16 during WWDC, its event for developers, whose inaugural conference takes place on June 6. The ergonomics of the mobile system has been thoroughly redesigned, and several applications have undergone major innovations. In the aftermath, Apple has delivered a beta of iOS 16. It is accessible by registration through its program for developers.

What’s new in iOS 16?

1. A new lock screen. As expected, the iOS lock screen now includes widgets like those of the Apple Watch. Alarm, calendar, weather information, battery levels, data from the Health app, but also order tracking, carpooling request… The new Activities feature manages the display of these live streams. A library of widgetized wallpapers is also offered. If needed, the Focus function associates with the lock screen widget of a focus configuration. Result: the display will be limited to the desired content.

2. The photo library. The iOS 16 photo library is now synchronized with iCloud to manage image sharing with up to 6 people, directly from the camera. Smart suggestions offer sharing with users present in the image.

3. The Courier. The search engine of the iOS messaging application is redesigned to improve the relevance of results. It analyzes both the contents of emails, attachments, privileges. Apple has also supplemented Mail with a whole series of features: possibility of canceling the sending of a message for a few seconds, detection of missing attachments, automatic reminder when emails have remained unanswered.

4. The Messages app. “SharePlay is now integrated with the Messages instant messenger, which makes it possible to enjoy synchronized content, such as movies and music, and to share playback controls while chatting in Messages”, says one at Apple.

5. Live text. The Live Text AI feature was already detecting text in photos. This possibility also supports video now. Other enhancements: Live Text extends to translation as well as device conversion.

6. Visual search. The Visual Search function allows you to select a subject on an image (a silhouette for example), then to detach it automatically from its background and, finally, to drag and drop it into another application, for example an instant message.

7.CarPlay. CarPlay now supports multiscreen. The app also integrates more intimately with the car. It also interacts with the radio while displaying and adjusting the temperature of the vehicle. Its interface will notably be able to integrate the fuel level. “The application supporting more widgets, it will allow you to view Weather and Music information at a glance, directly displayed on the dashboard”, says one at Apple.

8. Without networks. iOS 16 will be able to validate actions in hands-free mode. For example, the mobile system can play a piece of music when the user enters a room or uses his bicycle. This new feature is based on the American group’s Nearby Interaction framework. At the same time, iOS 16 will introduce the possibility of superimposing augmented reality graphic elements on the screen when approaching connected objects such as Airtag or Ultra Wideband. Enough to guide users within a physical store towards their preferences or visitors to a museum.

8. Confidentiality. A new application, called Safety Check, is offered for users who are victims of digital harassment or domestic violence. At any time, she can reset privacy permissions and application access.

When will iOS 16 be released?

In the wake of the inaugural WWDC conference on June 7, 2022, Apple delivered a beta of iOS 16. It is accessible by registration through its program for developers. The group anticipates the launch of a public beta of the new version of iOS during the month of July

With iOS 14.5, Apple introduced Application Tracking Transparency (ATT), a device that requires websites and apps on the App Store to ask users for permission before tracking them.

To systematically refuse this tracking synonymous with targeted advertising, simply go to Settingsclick on menu Privacy, then on Followed. The next screen allows you to allow or deny “app tracking requests”.
