Two interviewees lodged a complaint Fitbit and Google smartwatches for the fitness tracker’s tendency to overheat. The two California-based provocative suspects claim that overheating fitness trackers burns them and creates fire hazards.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs said in a statement people buy fitness trackers from Fitbit to burn calories and live a healthy lifestyle, not to burn your skin.
The suspects claim to have purchased Fitbit’s Versa line of fitness trackers and alleged that the watches created a burn hazard. One of the wrists claims that the smartwatch burned their daughter’s, while the other claims that they themselves were the victim.
Attorneys for the suspects also included photos of burn marks from others using other Fitbit models, including Fitbit Sense, Versa 3, Blaze, Inspire and Inspire 2.
The suspects also alleged that Fitbit customer support was not very helpful with heating issues before the incident, which led to the injuries.
The documents the suspects submitted included several screenshots of replies to Fitbit support on Twitter where customers were frustrated with long waits and unresponsive customer service while trying to get refunds for the recently recalled Ionic fitness tracker. .
Fitbit had recalled all of the Ionic smartwatches it sold after discovering there were critical issues with the batteries used in the devices. It was found that the batteries would overheat beyond the safe threshold and could burn customers. The company says it has recalled nearly one million units in the United States and about 7,00,000 units worldwide. Fitbit has also set up a refund registration page to make returns easier.
The minutes acknowledge that although a reminder was issued, it was not issued correctly. The plaintiffs allege that not all lots containing the defective batteries were recalled. They also claim that Google hasn’t done enough to stem the problem. They further allege that the recall and refund were issued only for the Ionic line of watches and did not include other models that used the same faulty batteries.
