Today, on the 20th global anniversary of Google News, and after a hiatus of almost eight years, this Alphabet subsidiary returns to Spain, thanks to an updated copyright law allowing Spanish media – big or small – to make their own decisions about how their content can be discovered and how they want to monetize it.
Through a dedicated website and app, coming soon to Android and iOS, Google News helps readers find information from authoritative sources, from the world’s largest news websites to small local and specialist publications.
By tagging and curating links to stories from a wide range of news sources — a key tool in the fight against misinformation — Google News helps readers more easily discover a view of together about what is happening around them.
This includes finding more local information, understanding breaking news stories of the day nationally and globally…all of which has been vetted beforehand to weed out fake news.
A helping hand to content providers and publishers after the health crisis.
The idea is primarily to make it easier for readers to find what they are looking for but also to benefit publishers by directing readers to their publisher websites, driving traffic, which at the same time monetizes in one way or another.
Research has shown that news consumption in Spain plummeted when Google News closed during 2014, resulting in a 10% drop in traffic to Spanish publishers’ websites – with an impact even bigger for smaller publishers.
This arrival is also done in parallel with that of a series of agreements concluded in particular with Google News Showcase on the Iberian web, the Google licensing program which allows publishers to manage their content on Google News or even Discover.
