Google and Accenture Help Build 5G AR Experience at Marvel Stadium – IoT World Today

The project is another step towards making it one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the world

Google, Accenture and Telstra have collaborated to create a 5G-powered AR wayfinding experience at Marvel Football Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

The project is expected to launch before next year’s football season.

The virtual experience was showcased at Google’s I/O Developer Conference earlier this month and combines Telstra’s 5G capabilities with Google’s cloud platform and machine learning geospatial API ARCore to provide visitors with a virtual experience that includes interactions with virtual brands and digital characters, as well as directions to their seats and other wayfinding features.

Google Trekker devices were used to create a metric model of the stadium, with GPS readings then paired with 360 degree imagery using the ARCore geospatial API.

Telstra Group chief product and technology officer Kim Krogh Andersen said the project is an important step in making Marvel one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the world. In support of this mission, Telstra has previously worked with the Australian Football League (AFL) to integrate 5G connectivity into the venue for applications such as AI, stadium streaming and player performance tracking. .

“Google Cloud technology supports next-generation 5G capabilities, transforming the way people interact with the physical environment around them,” said Alister Dias, vice president of Australia and New Zealand for GoogleCloud. “Not only will this make it easier to explore the grounds of Marvel Stadium, but it also has tremendous potential to create more immersive and interactive experiences for fans.”

“This is just the start of how cloud-based 5G AR wayfinding solutions can be used to improve in-person experiences for all Australians,” Dias added.

Telstra has already hinted that 5G capabilities could be deployed to drive value creation and user experience in a range of other settings in the future, including hospitals, shopping malls and airports.
