In 2020, the MET gala was canceled due to a health crisis. In 2021, the most important fashion event in the United States (and perhaps the world) was held in September. “After two turbulent years, the Metropolitan Museum gala is making a splash on its ritual date of the first Monday in May, this May 2, 2022, with the second part of its theme focused on American culture”, announces Madame Figaro.
For this first edition marking the return of the historic formula, the theme of the event was: “Gilded Glamor and White Tie, a direct reference to the Gilded Age or American Golden Age. Beginning around 1865, this “Belle Époque” in the history of the United States was marked by economic prosperity that contrasted with the Civil War that had just ended. It is also a period when racial, social and economic inequalities are most marked, ”says Euronews.fr.
Accessible only by invitation and after having paid an entry ticket of 35,000 dollars (i.e. more than 33,000 euros), the MET Gala raises funds for the Costume Institute, an entity of the museum, dedicated to fashion and which its own budget, in total autonomy.
Originality and tributes
Cover girl for the April 2022 edition of Vogue Us, Rihanna was one of the big absentees from this year’s MET Gala, due to her pregnancy. As an unbeatable fashion icon, her absence could not go unnoticed and the MET paid her a tribute worthy of her rank: “The Metropolitan Museum of Art and US Vogue have decided to wink at her on video, shot by Bardia Zeinali. In it, we then discover a pregnant Rihanna in a golden statue, installed in the heart of the ancient galleries of the museum, ”explains Vogue.fr. The statue, virtual, had the effect created and it was shared by Rihanna on her social networks.
Through their clothing choices, the personalities present also paid tribute to the major figures of the American golden age as required by the theme: “The Sarah Jessica Parker ensemble created by Christopher John Rogers refers to a creation by Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley. First black milliner in the White House, she notably dressed the first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, ”explains Euronews. “The outfit of Blake Lively, co-president with her husband of this edition, was submitted unanimously. In a Versace dress that transformed midway up the stairs, the actress paid homage to the Statue of Liberty.
After her total black look signed Balenciaga, Kim Kardashian, who became platinum blonde for the occasion, paid tribute to Marilyn Monroe: “Kim Kardashian had opted for one of the most iconic vintage outfits. It was in the famous dress that Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang “Happy birthday to you Mr President” to John F. Kennedy in 1962 that the young woman attended the Met Gala,” explains TF1.fr. After losing seven kilos to be able to put on this mythical dress, the businesswoman could only wear it on the red carpet and had to exchange it for a replica since the original dress did not completely fit her, according to the confidences of several media.
In a contemporary wedding dress from the Off-White brand, Kylie Jenner wanted to pay tribute to the founder, Virgil Abloh, who passed away in November 2021: “The young woman’s personalized bridal ensemble allows for a multi-tiered tulle skirt and a Knitted t-shirt with the Off-White logo on the front. Instead of a traditional wedding veil, Kylie Jenner wore a backwards baseball cap, which was adorned with a mini veil and floral appliqué work. A similar style closed the Off-White show for fall-winter 2022-2023, designed by Virgil Abloh before he died in November 2021 at the age of 41, ”explains Vogue.fr.
Created in 1948 and initially reserved for New York high society, the MET Gala experienced a radical change with the arrival of Anna Wintour in 1995. After taking the reins of the event, the high priestess of fashion l ‘ an open to showbizz, inviting actors, singers and even influencers.
